Frequently Asked Questions

What are your COVID-19 policies?

The Canadian government requires all non-Canadians entering the country to be vaccinated and so all our guests will be vaccinated. With that being said, we don’t know which of the various vendors do and do not have vaccine mandates, so cannot guarantee a 100% vaccination rate for anyone you might interact with at our wedding who is not a guest. We are aiming to have the ceremony outside, but meals will mostly be indoors. We ask all guests who are able to take COVID tests before arriving at the venue.

What is the dress code?

We are getting married in the woods of northern Ontario, so for the vast majority of the weekend (including the rehearsal dinner) the dress code is casual. You might want to even bring some hiking boots for the trails. For the ceremony itself, we are going to get fancy because being fancy every now and then is fun! We’re calling the aesthetic “fireside formal and festive flannel” which basically just means either formal clothes you wouldn’t mind being by a fire in or flannel that looks festive and fresh. In case it helps influence your sartorial selection, the wedding party's attire will consist of elegant dresses and three-piece suits.

Do you have directions for how to get to Stokely?

Yes! We have written directions for if you are driving from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan or if you're driving from Toronto. Click here to view them. Make sure to have cash on hand if you are driving over the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge which connects Michigan and Canada.

Are pets allowed on site?
Stokely Creek Lodge does not allow pets. The Delta Hotels Sault Ste. Marie Waterfront - Marriott does. If you would like to bring your pet, you will need to stay at the Marriott and make arrangements for them during the time you spend at the wedding venue. The Canadian government has import requirements for pets; to ensure your pet is not involuntarily quarantined, ensure that you follow those requirements.

Why Sault Ste. Marie?

Our first time in northeast Ontario was in the early spring of 2019, when we completed a Great Lakes car trip where we hit all five lakes in a week. We never planned on stopping in the Soo at first, but after a four foot snow-drift got the better of our car, we pulled into the town to get our vehicle fixed up. Our time should have been a miserable one - snow banks were higher than our car, the famed Soo locks were closed, and the few open storefronts were very confused about why we were there. But we found a wonderful coffee shop that put maple syrup in their excellent roast, a book store that contained a 1000+ page Ursula Le Guin novella collection, and a beautiful river to stroll along.

Ever since then, we’ve often found ourselves - deliberately or inadvertently - drawn back to both sides of the Soo. The boreal shield zone, with the towering mixed forests giving way to taiga further north, the idyllic glacial lakes, and the craggy bedrock (the oldest surface-level rock on the planet, ranging from 500 million to 3 billion years old), is a treasure trove of natural history, human history, and wildlife. Before ground transportation became feasible, Sault Ste. Marie was also a transportation hub, as canoers wanting to navigate between the upper and lower lakes had to portage the 8-metre drop between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. Although road transportation is now more common, Sault Ste. Marie has maintained its role as a shipping city and the sole accessible connection between the massive Lake Superior and the majestic Lake Huron. And, because of the topography of northern Ontario, roads are uncommon, so Sault Ste. Marie is a required waypoint between eastern/central Canada and the west.

When we were thinking about where we would like to get wed, we knew that because of our geographically diffuse community, the vast majority of our guests would likely have to travel. We chose this spot in part because we find nature to brush against the sacred and because we hoped that some of you too might enjoy interacting with this unique corner of the world. We also sought to create a connection with a place that we have ties to not just in our past and in the present, but also one we hope to forge a connection with into our future.

How can I find Dominion infiltrators in Federation space?

Contrary to popular belief, there is no failsafe way to tell whether Changelings are present on Earth. Attempts to use blood tests and low-setting phaser bursts to locate Dominion infiltrators have proven helpful, as they are unpleasant to the natural gelatinous state of Changelings and they thus revert to that form, but disciplined shape-shifters are able to avoid or pass those tests. Prior to the destruction of the Obsidian Order, it was said that the Cardassians had developed a tool to make shape-shifting impossible within a specific radius; after eighteen hours in the vicinity of this radius, a potential Changeling will begin to experience significant adverse effects, whereas humanoids and other “solids” experience no harm. It is also said that as-yet-unknown agencies within the Federation are developing a morphogenic virus for selective deployment on the Changeling homeworld in the Gamma Quadrant, although no record of any such project exists on file. Ultimately, however, Changelings have proven adept at mimicking even family and friends of Federation citizens without being noticed, and it is advised that no information pertaining to the Dominion War be shared without a clear purpose. All Federation citizens should keep in mind the 190th Ferengi Rule of Acquisition: “Hear all, trust nothing.”

Can you tell me a little bit about Lansing Common FC?

So glad you asked. Once upon a time, Lanstronauts (our official name) were plagued by the misfortune of having our city’s soccer team shut down by a rich owner who was dissatisfied by the amount of profit the team was making. After Lansing Ignite folded up shop after only one season, the city’s soccer faithful were crushed. However, they soon realized a core truth. The people united will never be defeated. They banded together and pooled their resources to create a democratic, collectively governed soccer team based on a membership model. Lansing Common FC was born. Each summer in Lansing, hundreds descend around the pitch to cheer on our beloved, collectively-run Robins at a stadium bedecked with tifos carrying the inspiring messages along the lines “For Glory Not Greed.”
